Plant's secret power

　In August of 1771, Joseph Priestley put a small branchof the mint into a transparent closed space with a candle that burned out the air until it soon went out. After 27days, he lit the extinguished candle again and it burned perfectly well in the air that previously would not support it. So Priestley proved that plants somehow change the composition of the air. In another celebrated experiment from 1772, Priestley kept a mouse in a jar of air until it collapsed. He found that a mouse kept with a plant would survive. Green tea has long history in Japan and strong ties with Japanese culture. Because of this, one might think that green tea comes from a plant unique to Japan. They are, in fact, the result of different ways of growing the tea and treating it after it is picked.

True smile and Fake smile

The smile may no longer be an effective way to mask one's true feelings. Some psychologists have claimed that true smiles and false smiles use different muscles. For example, in the true smile, the muscles surrounding the eyes tighten, while the cheek muscles pull the corner of the lips upward. On the other hand, in the false smile, the muscles between the eyebrows move slightly, while the muscles around the mouth pull the corners of the lips downward. If the psychologists' claim is proven to be true, perhaps people will worry less about what they say and more about which muscles to use when they smile.

A Difference of gesture

Physical gesture may have different meaning in different cultures, and misunderstanding these signal can sometimes be embarrassing. I once had an experience which I have never forgotten. Some years ago, I took some foreign students to Kyoto. I counted them with the index finger, which is common in Japan. But one of them became quiet and looked puzzled. When I asked him what was the matter, he replied. "In my country, we count people with our eyes. Mittens' Tree Rescue「ミトンズ、木から救出される」

Once upon a time, there was a happy cat named Mittens. Mittens loved to play with toys and cuddle with her owner, Sarah. Sarah loved Mittens too and made sure to give her plenty of food, water, and attention. One day, Mittens got stuck in a tree while chasing a bird. She meowed loudly for help, and Sarah heard her. Sarah quickly called the fire department, and they came to rescue Mittens. They used a ladder to reach her and bring her down safely. Mittens was a little scared, but she was happy to be back on the ground with Sarah. From that day on, Mittens was more careful when chasing birds and never got stuck in a tree again. 昔々、幸せな猫のミトンズがいました。ミトンズはおもちゃで遊んだり、飼い主のサラと一緒に抱き合ったりするのが大好きでした。サラもミトンズが大好きで、食べ物や水、そしてたくさんの愛情を与えていました。ある日、ミトンズは鳥を追いかけて木に登ってしまい、取り残されてしまいました。ミトンズは助けを求めて大きな声で鳴きました。サラが鳴き声に気づき、すぐに消防署に電話をしました。消防士たちはハシゴを使ってミトンズを救出し、無事に地面に戻しました。ミトンズは少し怖かったけれど、サラと一緒に地面に戻れてとても嬉しかったです。その日から、ミトンズは鳥を追いかけるときにはもっと注意深くなり、もう二度と木に取り残されることはありませんでした。
